The second cinematic part in the Baahubali franchise, it is the follow-up to Baahubali: The Beginning, serving as both a sequel and a prequel. The film is set in medieval India and follows the sibling rivalry between Amarendra Baahubali and Bhallaladeva; the latter conspires against the former and has him killed by Kattappa. Years later, Amarendra's son returns to avenge his death.

Plot summary

The film begins with Kattappa narrating the story of Amarendra Baahubali to Mahendra Baahubali (Shivudu), who learns his lineage as the prince of Mahishmati and the son of Amarendra Baahubali.

Amarendra Baahubali is declared as the future king of Mahishmati and Bhallaladeva as his commander-in-chief. Before the coronation, Rajamata Sivagami orders Amarendra to tour the kingdom to understand its people and learn of its problems. On his journey, he meets Devasena, the princess of Kuntala kingdom, and falls in love with her. He woos her with his charm and helps her in defending her kingdom from an invasion by Pindaris, a dacoit-like army.

Bhallaladeva learns of Amarendra's love for Devasena and plots against him with his father Bijjaladeva. They manipulate Sivagami into believing that Amarendra is trying to assassinate Bhallaladeva. Sivagami orders Kattappa to kill Amarendra secretly. Kattappa obeys her command reluctantly and stabs Amarendra in the back, killing him.

Devasena gives birth to a baby boy before she is captured by Bhallaladeva's soldiers. She names him Mahendra Baahubali before she is taken away. Kattappa rescues the baby with the help of local rebels and escapes to a tribal village. There he raises him as Shivudu.

After hearing Kattappa's story, Mahendra Baahubali (Shivudu) decides to dethrone and punish Bhallaladeva for all wrongdoings of his past with the help of Kattappa and his allies. He infiltrates Mahishmati as a refugee and befriends Avanthika, a rebel warrior who also seeks revenge against Bhallaladeva for enslaving her people.

Together they rescue Devasena from Bhallaladeva's palace and fly away on a chariot. Bhallaladeva chases them with his army and engages in a fierce battle with Mahendra Baahubali. Mahendra Baahubali reveals his identity to Bhallaladeva and declares himself as the rightful king of Mahishmati.

The battle culminates in a one-on-one fight between Mahendra Baahubali and Bhallaladeva on a massive metal structure that resembles a palm tree. Mahendra Baahubali overpowers Bhallaladeva and kills him by crushing his head with a stone boulder.

Mahendra Baahubali is then crowned as the king of Mahishmati and reunites with his mother Devasena. He also learns that his real name is Mahendra Baahubali, named after his father. The film ends with a montage of the characters' happy moments and a dedication to the late K. V. Vijayendra Prasad, the father of the director and the story writer.
